The DogHouse Project:

CREST HAVEN — Students at the Special Services School District built and donated three dog houses to pet owners who are disabled or receive state aid such as food stamps, Medicaid, rental assistance or supplemental security income.

Lower Township Animal Control Officer Don Montgomery picked up the doghouses from the school Feb. 11.

Teacher Mike McCarthy said the project helped students with their woodworking skills while providing a service to the community. Students selected plans with off center doors, which helps the structure store the canine’s body heat to help protect dogs from the elements.

Most towns only allow a dog to chained outside for a limited amount of time and the doghouses will provide shelter.

Paws and Claws Society of Thorofare provided funding for the doghouses.

With the thermometer dipping to some of the lowest temperatures of this winter, the doghouses could not have come at a better time, said Montgomery.

Carpentry introduces students to the general principles of basic carpentry emphasising safety measures and positive work attitudes associated with employ-ability skills.
Students engage in a wide variety of individual construction projects that progressively lead to understanding and creating design layout
and the use of:
Construction with hand-held tools
Portable power tools
Woodworking tools
Machine tools
to complete all aspects of his/her individual project.

Knowledge of different kinds of wood and their uses, as well as adhesives, fasteners and finishes are incoporated into hands-on learning projects.

Students are provided with direct instruction and over-site supervision to reinforce understanding of dailey tasks, appropriate carpentry techniques and
safe work habits.

Students develop entry-level carpentry skills that they can use on the job and for personal satisfaction in their own lives.

CARPENTRY STUDENTS HANG DRYWALL AT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HOUSE

The CMCHS carpentry students got some real hands-on experience hanging drywall at the Habitat for Humanity house recently. The drywall is already finished and painted. The next thing the students will be working on is building the rear deck and the front steps.

The house is scheduled to be finished by the end of February 2007 for the new home owners who are very anxious to move in.

Our students have been involved in this building project since November 2005 learng and mastering skills in: closet building, installing vinyl siding, installing soffits, cutting in attic stairs, installing attic flooring, hunging drywall, and building decks and steps.

We are very proud of our students, as are they too, of their accomplishments and in the knowledge that their efforts are helping a deserving family realize the dream of home ownership.
