Bubbles for Autism
Ocean Academy students and staff gather together to celebrate "Bubbles for Autism" outside the school. "Bubbles for Autism" is held during National Autism Awareness month every April. Special Services Schools offer four autism classes in Ocean Academy. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 1 in 94 children in New Jersey has autism! The idea for educating people about this disorder is based on an old Cherokee custom using butterflies. We blow bubbles in honor of someone we know with autism. Special Services' Autism programs are based on an eclectic, integrated approach reflective of research-based, best practices designed to teach students to function independently and demonstrate appropriate social and communication skills for successful interaction . A total communication approach that includes sign language, augmentative communication, PECS, Assistive Technology, DIR/Floor-time approach, High Scope’s Cognitively Oriented Curriculum, Structured Social Skills Instruction and sensory integration is used. Cape May County Special Services School District is dedicated to providing the skills necessary for meaningful participation in all aspects of life for students identified as having autistic spectrum disorders. This includes improving communication skills and providing social & sensory integration to allow these students to reach their full potential.
