Social Emotional Learning/Social Skills Special Education Teacher

Full-time, 10 months, benefits, NJ DOE Teacher of the Handicapped Certificate or NJ DOE Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certificate and a Content Area Certification, previous experience working with special education population preferred

Definition:

Under the direction of the school principal, provides guidance, consultation and professional development for staff and students on implementation of behavior management strategies and supports for students with challenging behaviors. Acts as a service provider for students with goals related to behavior or social emotional learning. Assists special education and general education teacher in providing a safe and secure learner-centered environment for students with disabilities.

Examples of Duties:

  • Provides academic and social emotional learning instruction throughout the school day, as determined by a student’s Individualized Education Program.
  • Teaches and supports direct instruction of social skills, anger management strategies, and conflict resolution skills to classes, small groups, and individual students.
  • Utilizes and implements appropriate crisis intervention procedures as needed. Develops and implements crisis de-escalation intervention strategies and techniques. Provides leadership and training of positive behavior support strategies, to include crisis intervention and classroom management to school staff.
  • Provides direct support to instructional staff in the use of positive behavioral interventions and the implementation of behavior management programs.
  • Consults with parents, private providers, and agency representatives regarding student behavior and related issues.
  • Meets and collaborates with the administrative team, academic teams, and individual teachers to discuss behavioral needs of students, identifies appropriate strategies and interventions.
  • Assists with the implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans.
  • Participates in IEP meetings, as needed.
  • Collaborates with school staff to establish school-wide social skills goals and objectives.

SPEECH LANGUAGE SPECIALIST

Pediatric Occupational Therapist

Itinerant (contracted), part-time positions, 1-5 days a week, competitive rates

Qualifications:

Responsibilities:

  • Screen, assess, and evaluate students using appropriate tests and assessment instruments
  • Plan and provide appropriate specialized therapy techniques through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational needs of the student consistent with therapy goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings to develop Individual Education Plans
  • Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of therapy services
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom based activities
  • Counsel and involve parents in the therapy program of their child
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required in accordance with federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and school policy to include documentation for the need for equipment and materials
  • Meet the needs of all students effectively by working in partnership with other disciplines.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and school policy
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of research, theories, and practices associated with therapy in the school-based setting

Qualifications:  

1. Master’s degree or above in a mental health discipline 

2. Experience working with special needs children and families

3. Experience in counseling and interview techniques, theory and procedures in individual and group counseling

4. Trauma Focused Behavior Cognitive Therapy- TF-CBT Certification preferred.

READING SPECIALIST

Part-time, 10 months, no benefits, NJ DOE Reading Specialist Certificate, experience with special needs students preferred, effective 9/1/19

Qualifications:

1.  Possess knowledge of language development, the reading process, and the components of reading performance to assess and instruct.

2.  Experience working with Fountas and Pinnell and Orton Gillingham programs preferred.

Job Goals:

1.  Plan and implement sequential learning experiences for students using a variety of instructional strategies, consistent with the district and school’s philosophy, mission statement, instructional goals, school level objectives, and the NJ Student Learning Standards.

2.  Engage learners in differentiated learning experiences for a range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the classroom.
