Dr. Seuss on the Loose

March 2 is the birthday of Dr. Seuss, a favorite author in the Media Center.  Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel, would have been 112 years old this year!  His birthday is the annual date for Read Across America Day, which was celebrated in style at Special Services with assemblies featuring the Cat in the Hat and Grinch.  OA students also participated in special Seuss projects designed by retired teacher Donna Soennichsen.   The Seuss artwork and other author projects are on display in the hallway outside the Media Center.

Author! Author!

This year, we had not one, not two, but three authors visit the Special Services Media Center.  All three authors were from the local area, and each worked with a different group of students.

Traci Dunham, author of The Oyster's Secret and My Sister Lulu and Me, visited in January.  Ms. Dunham lives in Haddonfield and spends summers in Wildwood Crest.  She talked with three groups of preschool/elementary students, reading her story The Oyster's Secret.  They students then made an oyster craft project to take home.

The second author was Carol Plum-Ucci, who lives in Margate.  She writes fiction for young adults.  Ms. Plum-Ucci was last year's "Author of the Year" for the New Jersey Association of School Librarians.  She met with a group of high school students from the PRIDE, SAIL and Compact programs in January.  Many of the students read her book The Body of Christopher Creed and had questions about the story and how she wrote it.

The third author was Mary Ann Castagnetta, who lives in North Cape May.  She has written two picture books, Bubble Gum Dreams and Elephant Soup, which she shared with three groups of OA and CMCHS students.  She talked with students in February about writing and using your imagination, and students wrote and drew their own versions of a "bubble gum dream".

Many thanks go to the CMCSSSD Education Foundation for funding the author visits!
