As the Assistant Superintendent at Cape May County Special Services School District (CMCSSSD), I welcome you to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.  I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable summer break.  During the past six months we have come together and worked through the daily challenges of educating and providing related services through remote learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  These have been extraordinary times, but we have risen to the challenge and we now find ourselves with a newer and more robust skill set that allows for various programming options such as in-person, full virtual, and hybrid programming for the 2020-2021 school year.

The CMCSSSD Reopening Plan, which was driven by safety and science as well as parent, community, and staff input, plans for in-person, virtual and hybrid programming to begin in September.  As you know, in-person programming will look different as the health and safety of our students calls for specific modifications to the environment to support social distancing. Students and staff will also be wearing masks to the greatest extent possible.  Given the special needs of our students, we have included many social stories and targeted supports to help us address this health mandate.  Our staff, including therapists, BCBA, and teachers will model, teach, and support our students as we transition them back to in-person instruction.  Our Reopening Plan will be updated frequently with any new guidance that is received from the New Jersey Department of Health and the New Jersey Department of Education.  Please remember that these changes are temporary and will support the health and wellness of our students and staff until we can resume normal programming and scheduling.

Our goal at CMCSSSD is to always make a meaningful difference in our students’ lives by providing the best education possible.  We understand that this year’s program is going to be different from what we are used to—but please know that we will always have your child’s best interests at the forefront of every decision we make.  Even with social distancing, we understand the importance of building relationships and interacting with each other.  We will continue to provide the highest quality individualized special education available.  We are proud of our unique and flexible programming options and will continue to help our students overcome obstacles and achieve their highest potential—especially during this very challenging time.

As we approach the first day of school, it is important for you to know that our CMCSSSD Staff and Board of Education have been very busy preparing for the upcoming school year and have planned for multiple scenarios given the current pandemic.  We will continue to keep you updated as new guidance and recommendations are provided.  As of today, we have planned for a modified September schedule that will help provide additional individualized supports for your student as they transition back to school.  This schedule will also help prepare students and families for both in-person and virtual programming should the governor require schools to go fully remote at anytime during the 2020-2021 school year.

As you prepare to send your children back to school, please visit our website at www.cmcspecialservices.org for our updated school calendar, school contact information, Parent/Student Handbook, Board Policies, COVID-19 information, Menus, Parent Resources, Technology Help Desk/Parent Trainings, Free and Reduced Meal Forms, and other pertinent district information.

For the 2020-2021 school year, we will continue to utilize our Parent Portal, which will allow you access to your child’s school information 24/7 through the internet.  This will include your child’s marking period grades, attendance, and demographic information.  In addition, on the Parent Portal, you will be able to update contact information as well as review and acknowledge important documents required for the upcoming school year.

I welcome your input and encourage you to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you might have regarding your child’s program or our CMCSSSD Reopening Plan.   Parent/Guardian involvement provides a critical role in our students’ success!

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Jamie P. Moscony
